I bought The Karate Kid the other day while I was shopping for other things (maybe this is how I manage to spend so much money in places like Wal-Mart and Target).
My girls are at a funny, in-between age right now; too grown-up, really, for Disney films, but still too young for most other movies. I’ve been trying to find films that we can enjoy together that are appropriate for them, and I’m here to tell you that there are precious few of them.
The Karate Kid is a lovely little movie, and there’s very little in it that is at all objectionable; there is, obviously, some violence, and an occasional grown-up word, but none of that detracts from the film’s theme. I always loved Pat Morita’s character in this film; his simple good-heartedness and his love for Daniel always made me wish I knew someone like him (remember the scene with him in the catcher’s outfit?). The big idea of the movie - that fighting is always the last resort, but that it is a good and honorable thing to defend oneself - is one I really want my girls to learn.
There are a few other films I’ve set aside for general family consumption. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a likely candidate - I saw it in the theatres when it came out (if I remember correctly, I took my grandmother) - but I’d have to watch it again to be reassure myself that it’s okay for nearly-eight and nearly-ten year olds. We’ve seen Ever After several times - it’s a beautiful re-imagination of the Cinderella story and I highly recommend it. We have Casper and Hook, and I got 10 Things I Hate About You, which is a re-telling of The Taming of the Shrew and was a surprisingly fun little film.
If any of you out there in the blogosphere have any suggestions of movies for the ‘tween set, I’d be most appreciative.

Hmmm… “Animalympics” is one you’d have to borrow from me - I’ve never seen it on DVD, though I know it’s out there on VHS. It might be a bit younger than you’re looking for, though. “Hoodwinked” was a pretty good take on the Litle Red Riding Hood tale. It was more adult than the typical computer animated film, yet not overly so. “Tristan & Isolde” was ok. The Harry Potter films are a given, especially the first two. “Narnia.” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” “The Mask.” “The Princess Bride.”
I get you more as I think of them.
Big?
Three Men and a Baby?
Back to the Future?
(I am dating myself…)
I haven’t seen these next ones, but maybe
The Princess Diaries or Whale Rider
Bend it Like Beckham might work, but I still haven’t forgive Keira Knightly for some of her skanky outfits.
I didn’t mention that we already have The Princess Bride, Narnia, and all the Harry Potter movies. I forgot that I’ve also got Willow, which is a good ‘tween movie. I have Tristan and Isolde, but I’m not sure that either of my girls are quite old enough for that one yet - I’d give that to a 12 year old, not because of any material in it, per se, but because the story is pretty complex and I’m not sure my kids would sit still long enough to “get” it. I’d forgotten about Roger Rabbit. The Mask is a rental; Jim Carrey gets on my nerves.
We saw - and enjoyed - The Princess Diaries, but it would be a rental; we didn’t enjoy it enough to own. Big and Back to the Future, though - THOSE would be worth owning. I’ve still not seen Bend it Like Beckham; we’ll rent that one for a viewing and put it in the purchase consideration.
Thanks! Keep ‘em coming!
Hook?
Jumanji?
Zathura?
Babe?
the old live-action Disney flicks? Herbie? The Apple Dumpling Gang?
I’ll keep looking!
This is one question I ought to be good at and I’m coming up blank. You have the Indiana Jones movies, right? And Star Wars’ first trilogy?
JRH - I thought you were the one who loaned ME Whale Rider.
Chili, Whale Rider is a really good choice. Also, The Secret of Roan Innish is good and what about Triplets of Belleville?
Adventures in Babysitting is one I didn’t expect to like and ended up loving and it’d work for this age group.
How do you feel about Ferris Bueller?
How about another pass at Mouse Hunt? It’s a funny movie. maybe they won’t be scared anymore.
I was. Which doesn’t mean I have seen it.
HAHA! I actually own movies I haven’t seen yet, too. My video store often runs “five for twenty” sales, and I’ve been known to go in and grab four-dollar copies of films I’ve heard a lot of buzz about. Some of the DVDs I own that I haven’t yet seen are Million Dollar Baby, Ray, and Crash….
Ferris Bueller will be good in another couple of years. I’ll rent Whale Rider (I think it’s available for sale at the above-mentioned store, so if I love it, I’ll buy it). I haven’t seen Roan Innish or Belleville (isn’t Belleville a cartoon? Weren’t we gonig to try to see that in the theatres once when I was visiting?) I’d COMPLETELY forgotten about Indiana Jones. I don’t have the DVDs, but they’re on my wish list…
I LOVE putting out these questions to you folks! You come up with GREAT material! Thanks!
