A couple of my blogging friends, who happen to reside in more southern climes, have made mention lately of the way their regions handle snow (or, in Bo’s case, the way they DON’T handle snow. A town without a plow! Can you IMAGINE?!).
For these friends, I’m posting pictures I took literally five minutes ago. I will concede that it is very, very pretty in my neighborhood right now, but that’s all the positive press you’ll get out of me on this subject.
Here’s the view out the back door:
and the path to the grill (because we grill year ’round around here):
Here’s the path to the street (a.k.a. the driveway. The only reason you can actually SEE the actual driveway is because it faces dead south. Mr. Chili was thinking ahead when he oriented the house):
Here’s the side yard all covered in snow:
It may be a case of familiarity breeding contempt, but I’d be just as happy if it didn’t snow again all winter, and here are a few of the many reasons why: it makes roads hazardous and driving dangerous; it causes wicked glare in the sunshine; it piles up on roofs and can cause damage up there; it FALLS off of roofs and can cause damage on its way down; people don’t clean it off the roofs of their cars, and it flips off at highway speeds and can be a real danger (particularly when it’s all packed tight on top of 18-wheelers); it builds up on the mud flaps of our cars (we call them ‘car turds’) and drops off, leaving puddles in the garage that turn into mini skating rinks; it drains town budgets for plowing and salt (our taxes are likely to go up again next year as it is); it makes trash collectors’ and postal workers’ jobs harder; and it closes schools.
And just to make it MORE fun, here’s are forecast for the next few days!
Tonight![]() Wintry Mix Lo 28°F |
Friday![]() Freezing Rain Hi 37°F |
Friday Night ![]() Increasing Clouds Lo 18°F |
Saturday![]() Chance Snow Hi 34°F |
Saturday Night ![]() Snow Likely Lo 15°F |
I’m not sure all that’s a fair trade-off for “pretty.”

Now that Mr. Chili is a man cut out of the same mold as me. Gotta keep that grill going. North or South is immaterial on that one. Dr. B
Honesty, I am just as done as you are, and I grew up thinking this was normal and lovely (it IS pretty), as well as a challenge of adaptation. However, we’re down THREE snow days already and it isn’t NEAR the end of snow season, so enough already! DO you hear me, snow spirits???
Hey, where are the tornados in that forecast?
and because i’m insane, i’m pretty excited about traveling north for the weekend! snow chances on saturday in philly! woo!
Looks vaguely familiar…
We have the teensiest chance that we might see a snow flurry late Friday night, and you should hear the weather people, all excited. I, too, would like to have a little snow, but on the weekdays, people! So we can get out of frickin’ school! Can’t these weather people get anything right?!
We get out of school for hurricanes.
Current temps where I live is 53 degrees and it’s 4:50 in the afternoon. It felt brisk outside today, but nothing like where you live. I lived in Butte, Montana for two years when I was in junior high. That is when I learned that I was not cut out to be a snow bunny.
It looks like we might have about the same amount of snow. That last storm was south of us and missed us completely (well, we got about 5 inches, but that’s nothin’).
We’re supposed to get some this weekend, though.
Like Organic Mama said, we’ve used three storm days already and *gulp* that’s three more than we used last year. I hope we’re near the end. But I know we’re not.
It’s been very cold here in Las Vegas the last few days. Yes, I know it isn’t your kind of cold, but I wish it would snow just a little to justify these 20-30 degree temps.
I better just keep my mouth shut.
