Party Preparations
March 14, 2008 by mrschili
Beanie turns 9 on Sunday. There will be a tooth-achingly sweet post for her on her actual birthday, but today’s all about the preparations.
Bean and I share the dubious distinction in our household of being the two people born in the crappiest months, weather-wise. I was born dead in the middle of January - snow season - and she emerged into this lifetime dead in the middle of March - mud season around here if we’re lucky; this year, we’re still firmly ensconced in snow season. As proof, I offer exhibit A:

Saturday![]() Rain/SnowHi 40°F |
Saturday Night ![]() Chance Snow Lo 28°F |
Unlike Daddy and Punkin’ Pie (born on the thirtieth of May and the first of June, respectively), Beanie and I must plan indoor birthday parties because it’s just too nasty to be outdoors during our natal celebrations.
This year, Bean decided to go away from the custom of her pool party at the health club and opted instead for a pizza and pottery painting party (she, too, it seems, loves alliteration). We’ve invited six little girls - five for Bean and a friend for Punkin’ - and are meeting those who can make it tomorrow at a local pizza joint for lunch. Then, we’re heading upstairs to a pottery painting place where eight girls, ages 8 to 11, will spend an hour and a half decorating mugs, plates, and animal and fairy figurines.
The pottery place cleans up after us. I love that part.
Today is being spent in fussy preparations. I’ve got stuff for goody bags - candy, glow-stick bracelet, paint brushes and pots of water colors - and I’m baking a cake. She asked for a cake - not her customary cupcakes - and she wants it to be chocolate-chocolate; chocolate cake with chocolate frosting - no need for
contrasting flavors or colors for her (she’s SO my daughter!). We decided on a ganache frosting, to boot, so I’m going to the market in a few minutes to score a pint of heavy cream. I’m also going to see if I can find some candies that resemble flowers; she hinted that she might like flower decorations on the cake, rather than her initial idea of Harry Potter-type things like broomsticks and snitches.
It ought to be good.

My daughter is turning six on Sunday. I don’t know if I’ll be able to muster tooth-achingly sweet for my post…she’s not. Or I am not. Probably both.
We’ve got 12 kids going bowling. Can I crash Bean’s party instead? Pretty please?
I too will be baking this afternoon. Let’s lick the bowl, shall we?
Our forecast for tomorrow:
Sunshine and clouds mixed. High 58F. Winds NW 10 to 15 mph.
A little breezy, but not so crappy.
Good choices ALL my Beloved Bean! I wish I could be there.
9?!?! I remember 9 being horrible and awkward and am jealous of Beanie because she is so much better than I was at that age!
Ganache??? Can I come? I love ganache.
I don’t know why I thought of this, but I’m a little sad Harry Potter wasn’t written when I was a child. I think I would have liked to call the mean girls Snitches.
i hope you have the absolute best of times.
Happy birthday Beanie. March isn’t usually too bad down here, but it is hit or miss, and often very wet and rainy. My birthday is in December, a few days before Christmas; so it usually gets lost in the hubbub.
I love this stuff. I really do. Happy birthday to your Beanie, my friend.
