I’m giving you – and myself – a break from the Shoah and serving up some randomness for the start of the week.
First up, it’s Falcon’s birthday! Go on over and wish my friend happy!
How do I know it’s Falcon’s birthday? Because I put it in my calendar and my iPhone reminded me. At the stroke of midnight. There are sill come bugs to be worked out of the software – if an event is scheduled as an “all day” event, one cannot determine what time one wants to be reminded of that event – it defaults to midnight.
Mr. Chili and I watched Vantage Point last night. It was fun; I recommend it. Of course, my brain was working overtime trying to piece everything together – I didn’t quite make it – but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the film one bit.
I’m spending today in preparation for being out of commission for several days. I’m cleaning the house, doing as much laundry as I can, and running errands so that I can do nothing but recuperate after my wisdom teeth removal. Many people have told me that this is going to be a cinch – that because I’m neither impacted nor infected, the fallout won’t be terrible. I’m choosing to believe them, but I’m also arranging things such that I’m not expected to do anything until at least Thursday.
Are any of you good at genealogy? My grandfather has tasked me with finding an ancestor from Scotland who moved to Ohio via New England in the 1700’s, and I haven’t the faintest idea where to begin. Any suggestions you can toss my way would be most appreciated.
I’m trying to decide whether to hold a discussion about Frankenstein with my lit kids tonight or stick with my original plan and show them Mississippi Burning. A bunch of them have admitted to not finishing the reading, and I think it would be fruitful to read these two things- the novel and the film – in contrast to one another, so I might just bring popcorn to class tonight.
I LOVE my daughters’ new short hair. Michael was right when he said that their ‘dos were “fierce.”
I’ve got a STACK of movies lined up to watch while I’m recovering. The list includes Notes on a Scandal, The Last King of Scotland, Hotel Rwanda, The Kite Runner, Syriana, Traffic, Babel, Children of Men, and Tsosi. Any suggestions as to which I should choose (keeping in mind that I’ll likely throw a stupid comedy in there somewhere – none of these choices is particularly lighthearted)?
I’m off to the bookstore today to buy some used books for the Chili Family Book Club. The girls, Auntie, and I have agreed to start reading together, and I think we’re going to start with Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. From there, we’ll move on to The Diary of Anne Frank. I’m hoping to start working my way into this topic with my children – I’m most decidedly NOT leaving their education entirely to the school system. After that, though, I’m not sure what we’ll read together; perhaps something that one of the girls is reading for school. I do know that I’d like for us to share in reading, though, so I’m going to do the best that I can to see to it that the CFBC stays in operation.
In my travels today, I’m going to get vanilla yogurt and chocolate pudding for my sustenance over the next few days. Those of you who’ve had wisdom teeth out; what else would you recommend in the way of manageable nosh?
Finally, to those of you who have agreed to write guest posts for next week; don’t forget that I need your submissions by Friday so I can schedule them. I’m SO looking forward to what you’re going to contribute!
That’s about all I’ve got for you. Tomorrow’s Ten Things Tuesday post is written and scheduled because I’m expecting to be absent, even of myself, for most of the day. I’ll see you again on Wednesday.

I don’t know but you might want to take all the nutty genocidal movies (Rwanda, Last King) off the recuperation list. Crying will only make your mouth hurt more. As you know Notes is one of my faves. I recently saw a lovely little movie called Ladies in Lavender that you might like. Period, girly, interesting, well-acted. Have you seen all the Ocean movies (11, 12, 13)? They’re mindless fun. What about Live Free or Die Hard, I had fun with that last week. I just went to look at my Netflix returns for a comedy for you and it seems I haven’t watched a comedy since February. Huh. In February I watched Men With Brooms and it was fun and Paul Gross is hot. For series I recommend Slings & Arrows and Big Love. Have you watched the Wire yet? Not a comedy but the best series on TV, not joking.
Good luck tomorrow. I’m sure it’ll be smooth.
Two Rwanda films that were very good are Sometime in April and Beyond the Gates. They are both very powerful movies. But, like Kizz said, you will cry. Your mouth will hurt.
Oh! Under the Same Moon is a fantastic movie!! Not a comedy though.
Hmm, I will have to rack my brain for comedies.
I’d highly recommend reading The Cure (though you might want to read it first, as it is 10 & up). I read it in the beginning of high school (my younger sister had checked it out) and was really moved by it.

Of your movie list, further narrowed down to the ones I’ve seen (Hotel Rwanda, Syriana, Babel, and Tsosi), I found Tsotsi the the best (even happy in parts!), and then Hotel Rwanda. Syriana was OK; it was kind of formatted like Love Actually, which I didn’t like. If you like that style, though (several mostly unrelated narratives running side by side), that certainly falls ahead of Syriana, and maybe if you don’t.
As I recall, when I had my wisdom teeth out, I was advised to be a little careful of how much sugar I consumed because it can promote infection. Of course I was a teenager at the time so he was probably thinking I would try to eat ice cream morning, noon, and night! I seem to recall that as long as I was careful about keeping food to the front of my mouth, it wasn’t too long before I could eat pretty much what I wanted without pain (well, probably not steak…).
Good luck!
It’s been a long time since I had any teeth extracted (once for orthodontic work and once for wisdom teeth) but I think I ate warm soup (not too hot and nothing too acidic!) and overcooked noodles that turned to mush quickly. Soft bananas were okay. You might be able to do cream of wheat, too. Just stay away from rice or oatmeal – anything where you have the chance of pieces getting lodged.
I don’t remember being on a soft diet for long, either. I don’t remember wanting very much food the first day, anway. Actually, I don’t think I remembered much about the first day at all… I went to sleep at the oral surgeon’s office, roused when they were getting me in the car, woke up again several hours later in the recliner at home, and then woke up again the next morning in my bed.
Good luck with the teeth extraction!
Actually I was able to trace my family all the way back to when they first came to the US through a county-based genealogy site in Virginia. Not sure if you can do it that way or not, but you never know. It might work.
Children of Men gets my vote. The movie makers took an inkling of an idea from the book and ran with it; it is one of the few examples of a movie that is far better (imho) than the novel.
This is your chance to have as many milkshakes as you want. Don’t waste it!
1. That is a very serious list of movies. I have seen most of them, and you NEED to throw a couple of comedies in there or you will become unbelievably depressed.
2. For the genealogy- try cyndislist.com. It is a HUGE site, but may help you narrow some things down. It is overwhelming, so be prepared. Good luck!
Yeah, your list seems a bit heavy, so do hold true to your word and throw in a comedy.
How about mashed potatoes and gravy for some smooth food? Mmmmmm (insert Homer Simpson’s voice here.)
Good luck with your choppers and enjoy your “down” time.
Ouch!
I have been extremely lucky with my wisdom teeth. They never caused problems, and one of them grew in and behaves like a real tooth. They are all still in my head.
If you get pain medication, take it.
You definitely need some lightness in the movie list–toss in The Bucket List, I watched it last week.
I hope you’re recovering well! My scheduled post is almost ready, I’ll be emailling it to you by the end of tomorrow!
