I’m kind of taking the day off.
We had a teacher workshop day today. I was supposed to be renewing my CPR certification, but the time for the class was switched on me after I made plans around the original time, so I bailed. I went to Punkin’ Pie’s teacher conference this morning, had lunch with my family and Sphrynatude at a local (and very yummy) pizza place, then dropped Beanie at a friend’s house and took Punkin with me to the bookstore, where I bought Toni Morrison’s a mercy and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I went in looking for Three Cups of Tea but, of course, the store didn’t have a single copy. Neither did they have a copy of a handbook for debate, so I went home, logged on to Amazon, and bought myself some presents (oh, and I threw in the first season of Sons of Anarchy, just because I could).
Now I’m going to take my pretty light blue pen and a (short) stack of freshman and sophomore research papers and head for the couch. I plan to be in my pajamas by 6:30 tonight, and I may even open a bottle of wine to seal the deal.
What’s YOUR Friday been like?

Mrs. Chili,
Long time reader, rare commenter here. Can I ask you a question about teenagers? How can I motivate my 15 yr old to write/work/read closer to her potential instead of taking the lazy way out and then fight and fuss about missing homework or poor grades from not doing assignments? She is bright, capable of working way above grade level (has been for years) and just uninterested in putting in any sort of effort unless it’s for her own personal use. I am at a loss here.
As for my weekend, I will join you with that bottle of wine. Then tomorrow, I will be demolishing the two goat stalls in our barn to make a single horse stall in preparation of my boy coming home. The physical labor will be a good catharsis for my frustrations with my teen. And then on Sunday, I will begin to plan out Thanksgiving dinner for my extended family and figure out what all we need to purchase that isn’t food related (new guest towels, more dishes, servingware, etc). I will add in two walks in the vineyard next door with my pups because we all need to run and play to maintain mental health.
Wearing two different socks by mistake. Pretty much sums it up!
Hoping for a cold beer later.
Taking care of a sick kid while trying to read about the politics of education. Terrible headache. Getting ready for work. Bill Engvall tonight . . . again (probably the 4th or 5th time I’ve seen him). Won’t be home until about 2am and would much rather stay home and open a bottle of wine.
Am puppy-sitting for most of the weekend. And using it as an excuse to ditch my book group brunch (I didn’t bother to read the book anyhow).
I need to relax.
Sounds like an enjoyable day!
Yesterday was my birthday so I’m spending today playing with all the “toys” I got.
Picked up Mom’s ashes at the funeral home. Bought 22 four-inch pansy pots at the nursery ’cause Mom always had those on HER patio in the cooler months (so now I will too; Dad already took care of planting 54 pansies in Mom’s planters). Baked batch #2 of cookies for the memorial open house next week. Worked on the Memory Album while Mr. Mamie scanned yet more pictures of Mom. Discussed with Niece (age 6) the concept of a “Goodbye Party” for Grandma, and whether it is still “Grandma’s House,” or *just* Grandpa’s (conclusion: still Grandma’s).
Going to end the day with a big plate of comfort pasta and some ice cream while watching some Netflix and Redbox rentals with the Mister.
Not exactly my ideal Friday, but glad I could tell you about it. I know you understand.
Yes, Honey, I TOTALLY understand, and it’s precisely BECAUSE I understand that I know there’s really nothing else to say.
Hold still and see if you can feel a big hug…..
Me–
1. Gave and monitored two groups of Juniors there final test on The Crucible.
2. Watched one episode of Dr Who with a group of Juniors to compare to The Crucible.
3. Fussed at seniors and told them that if they have a job interview at 4 pm and showed up at 9 pm, they will not get the job. I told them they were not going to get credit for an assignment emailed like that.
4. Organized our Antigone comic strip for a group of sophomores.
5. Ran lunch detention and listened to mariachi music.
6. Listened to the sub in the next room totally lose control of her students.
Lots of other things…but those are the big things. Brain dead. Please, I know grammatical mistakes are there and The Crucible and Antigone should be underlined, but I can’t figure out how to do that right now.
rock on, Ms Chili
Oh, God. I can’t resist correcting myself….”there” should be “their.” Sorry!
Some days I want a big, red, permanent marker…forget the light blue pen!
Got a student sent to my class by another teacvher, kid was crawling around making cat noises (yes, it IS middle school!) and said student flipped me off, went passive agressive, dialed the phone to call home but didn’t pick up the receiver, etc. sigh
Making tempura, playing cards with friends, finishing a good book. That’s tonight.
Ooops, you could have had my copy of Glass Castle. I have to say I didn’t love it, but I think I’m in the minority. Hope you enjoy!
Yesterday, we got up, drank our coffee, and had a bike ride.
We then drove to my Honey’s store (separate cars, sadly), Stamping Station, and I set up her new all-in-one printer (copier, fax, scanner). The old one had crapped out. I set it up wirelessly, and synched her laptop to it.
She stayed to operate the enterprise, and I drove home listening to the sad news about a murderous firearm rampage here in Orlando (that’s about 10 miles down I-4). Guy lost his job 2 years ago, and apparently stewed about it. “Fortunately” only one person died, and five others were wounded.
Back home, I was pretty blue (after the Fort Hood and Orlando shootings). I napped, computed, and pretty much funked out.
