CLEARLY, I Need an Intervention

These were in my purse.  My purse, mind you, not my briefcase.

Ten pens.  Something is deeply wrong with me.

Meme Monday

Another meme stolen, as per my usual, from the divine Tense.  Thanks, Honey, for all the great material!  This one’s especially good because it’s also wicked random, so I’m covering two of my favorite Monday themes with one post!

How many keys are on your keychain?
Technically, there are four – my car key, the key to the display case for the Diverse Student group at TCC, the key to my office (!) at Local U., and the old fashioned key that used to open my great-grandmother’s front door.  The new owners of the house gave me the key after she died, and I love that I touch it every day.

If you were given a canvas and watercolors, what would you paint?
water and sky

What do you regard as the most repulsive form of music?
I’m not a big fan of either twangy, self-pitying country music or misogynistic and violent gangsta rap.

Whose mind, besides your own, would you like to control?
I’d like to make my kids cooperate a bit more every once in a while, but I’d rather they come to that on their own.  I don’t think that mind control is the way to go.

What is the most dangerous occupation?
I’ve heard that fishermen have the most dangerous occupation, but I’m going to go with “soldier” here.  Fish don’t shoot back.

What is the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
I try to make the first words I say nice ones – I usually tell my husband good morning and that I love him, then I head to the potty.

What do you consider the greatest threat to mankind?
Intolerance and ignorance (and I know that’s two, but they are inexorably connected).

If you could project yourself into the past, where would you go.
I’d love to have been witness to Dr. King’s March on Washington.

What are you thankful you are not doing right now?
Lying in a dentist’s chair.

What is your favorite kind of candy?
Chocolate.  Duh.

What is your favorite thing about the beach?
I’m not overly fond of the beach, so I don’t spend a whole lot of time there.  When I am there, though, I like searching for treasures.  I had a BLAST at Sanibel looking for all kinds of different species, and I will treasure memories of beach-combing for sea glass on the Cape with Gerry and Honey.  We found pockets full of the stuff with them, and I feel like a game-show winner when I come across a single nice piece of glass on a beach around here.

If you were invisible, where would you go?
I’d like to watch my daughters play together.  I can hear them – they’re so adorable (most of the time) but their play changes whenever I’m in the room.

What is one object in your home that you are embarrassed to own?
I can’t think of anything, really.

Fill in the blank; When I dance, I look like…
An aerobics instructor; “one, two, three, four!”

Who is one person you wish you would have never met?
My parents, but that opens up a whole existential can of worms…

What is your favorite fruit?
Just ONE?!  Peaches.

What is your favorite kind of cookie?
Just ONE?!  Chocolate chip, the way my husband makes them, all gooey and mmmmm.

If you were an evil dictator, where would you rule?
I AM an evil dictator; just as Punkin’ Pie.

What do you need to get right now at the drug store?
Contact solution

What song do you keep hearing over and over again?
I am literally never without a song in my head, and they change all the time and for reasons I haven’t yet discerned (something will just pop in there; I have no idea where the music comes from).  The current soundtrack includes “The Voice” by The Moody Blues (“understand the voice within / and feel a change / already beginning“) and “Sunshine” by Vertical Horizon (“sometimes I can’t get enough / mmmmm of you / this friendly game keeps getting rough / I think I’m breakin’ through”).

What was the happiest age of your life?
Right now.

What is your favorite piece of clothing that you own?
Just ONE?!  I’ve got some yummy pajamas, and I’ve fallen in love with mini-skirts with shorts under them that I found at The Evil Empire (I know, I know… shut up).  I loved them so much that I went back and bought one of each color.

What two words describe your lifestyle?
Compassionate, connected

Which ocean creature fascinates you most?

On a scale of 1-10; how religious are you?
Why isn’t “0” an option?  I’m pretty high on the spirituality charts, but I have no use for religion.

What historical figure would you most like to have a discussion with?
Again with the just one?! Screw it; I’m breaking the rules; Abigail Adams, Martin Luther King, Jr, Malcolm X, Mahatma Gandhi, and Desmond Tutu – but not all at once.

What color looks best on you?
Anything autumn-ish; browns, greens and tans.

What is your favorite thing about being sick?
FAVORITE thing?!  About being sick?!  Who thinks these questions up?  I dislike pretty much everything about being sick (though, if we’re only talking mildly sick – with no puking – I’d have to say that the opportunity to lay around guilt-free and watch DVDs all day doesn’t suck, but it’s still not worth the “being sick” part)

Whats new?
I’m lighter by two teeth.  I’m teaching in a real University.  I’m the mother of a sixth and a fourth grader.  I own a motor scooter.

Why are you here right now?
To love and to teach.

What commercial do you find most annoying?
Any local ad, particularly the ones for furniture places.  On the other side, though, I’m really fond of this ad campaign, and this one, too.

What was your favorite meal growing up?
The maternal biologic didn’t cook so much as heat shit up in boil-in bags.  As a consequence, I liked going out for pizza or Chinese food.

If you had to spend the rest of your life in one place, where would it be?
I have the feeling that I’ll be spending the rest of my life right here in Coastal New England, and as long as I have my family and friends with me, I’m okay by that.  I might like to try someplace a bit more temperate, though it’d be tough to pry me from all the people I love who are right here.

Fill in the blank; I am so much smarter than…
My biological family ever thought I was.

What one person or thing reminds you of the 80s?
Depeche Mode

What is college really good for?
Teaching teenagers responsibility.

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever been?

What body part aches you the most right now?
Nothing, really.

When is the angriest you have ever been?
From about 12 until I moved out of my parents’ house at 17.  I wouldn’t recognize that girl now.

What do you waste your time doing?
Blogging; reading blogs, writing blogs, general goofing around on the internet.

On a scale of 1-10; how much do you trust people?
I probably trust people more than I should, so I’ll say about a 7; most people force me to adjust that number down, though.

If you were forced to choose your own death, how would you die?
I’d die peacefully, in my sleep – wouldn’t you?  Wouldn’t everyone?

On a scale of 1-10; how photogenic are you?
I’d give myself a 5 or so – people always seem to think that my pictures are nicer than I think they are, but I think that’s mostly true of everyone.

What aspect of your personality could use a little work?
Patience.  I’m working on it – actively – but I can still be too antsy.

What is your greatest addiction?
AGAIN with the just ONE?!  Books, chocolate, blogging.

What issue are you sick of hearing about?
Political infighting.  Democrats this and Republicans that.  Enough, already.

If you were a professional wrestler, what would your ring name be?
I haven’t the FAINTEST idea.  Is there a professional wrestler name generator on the internet somewhere?

What language would you like to master?

What is your favorite dish at a Chinese restaurant?
Cashew Chicken (didn’t I mention this already?).

From whom would you least likely expect a phone call?
Anyone in my biological family (excepting Auntie, of course).  For a while there, I actually considered getting caller ID just so I’d know if they were calling.  They haven’t… yet.

What is the longest you have ever gone without a shower?
In recent memory?  2 days during the Wilderness Week experience in college, when I met Boywer, as a matter of fact.  I’d heard rumor that there were showers at the base of the mountain on which we were staying, and I announced that I was going down the following morning.  Bowyer came with me, and we totally bonded on the walks down and back up and he’s been an inseparable part of my life ever since.

What is the saddest movie you have ever seen?
Oh, that’s a tough one.  Dances with Wolves always makes me cry.

What time do you usually fall asleep?
I’m usually in bed around ten, but I read for a bit every night.  I don’t really pay attention to what time it is when I turn the light out, so I guess I’m not really sure.

Where is the worst place to be stuck waiting?
The dentist’s office.

What is the cutest animal on Earth?
Do they have to STAY cute?  I think that lion kittens are adorable, then they grow into what I think are some of the most handsome creatures we’ve got on this rock.

Name one celebrity who has no right being a celebrity.
Just ONE?!  How about Paris Hilton.

What hobby have you always wanted to pick up?
Sewing.  I’ve tried, but I’m not really all that great at it.
