Six Word Saturday

Marriage is a Universal Human Right

Article 16.

  • (1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.
  • (2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
  • (3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

(and not for nothing, but nowhere is it explicit that men have to marry women (or women, men), though I can see where the more narrow-thinking among us might read the article that way. I wish that the UN authors had replaced “men and women” with “people,” but we work with what we have, I suppose…)

What do you think the odds are our government today would sign off on that declaration, or, for that matter, ratify joining the UN at all?

  2. Human rights exist to protect White Christian American Men. If they don’t protect that group, what good are they?

  3. Zactly Joe. The rest aren’t really human, are they. Not in their eyes anyway. If you aren’t in this class, you are subhuman.

  4. Yeah, to ALL of you. SO much well-deserved pessimism.

SW, your comments disturb me because I know that a lot – a terrifying number, in fact – of people really DO think that way. We’re coming up on the 71st anniversary of the Kristallnacht riots in Germany and Austria against the Jews (it is November 9th; ironically, that’s the same day the Berlin Wall “came down” when East Germany announced that GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin). It is truly horrifying what people can do once they’ve dehumanized another; I live in constant vigilance against that sort of thinking, but I’m afraid that I may well be in the minority…
