Quick Hit: Strangely Sentimental

I was running errands at 11:30 this morning, so I listened to the final launch of the Shuttle program on NPR from my car.

When the announcer said that the vehicle had cleared the pad – “We have liftoff!” – I burst into tears.  I have no idea why.  I’m welling up even as I write this.

Godspeed, Astronauts.  May this last trip bring you safely home again.

  1. I saw it on y computer, and I felt teary, too. Maybe because it’s the last one? Dunno…

  2. I am somewhat of a contrarian about the shuttle program. I think all the valuable space science is done by unmanned devices, and that the vast money which went into the shuttle program (and the white elephant ISS) could have been better spent on unmanned exploration.

    But that’s just me.
