Ten Things Tuesday

Yesterday, my husband and I were talking about how stagnant our dinner repertoire is.  I heard on the radio once that people end up eating the same five things over and over again, but I think we’ve got more than five.  Let’s see if I can come up with 10 things that regularly appear on the Chili dining room table, shall we?

1.  Mac and cheese.  This is a staple in our household in the winter.  It takes me no time to whip up and dear Goddess, but it’s yummy!

2.  Spaghetti (or, in some cases, tortellini).  The feature here is my spaghetti sauce; it’s thick and chunky and, well, yummy.

3.  Chicken pot pie.  Again, a comfort food staple.  I got this recipe from my grandmother, and it’s another that I can put together in no time.  Pair it with cheddar garlic biscuits and you’ve got yourself a meal.

4.  Steak.  I finally figured out how to cook a killer steak indoors; usually, steak is a summer food because Mr. Chili cooks it on the grill.  I’ve got a fool-proof method for cooking it indoors now, and though it sets off the smoke detectors, we’ve decided that’s a small price to pay for the gift of this meal.

5.  Baked chicken #1.  For this, I saute some spinach with a little garlic and some mushrooms, pile it on top of chicken breasts, cover it with a slice of provolone cheese, and pop it in the oven.

6.  Baked chicken #2.  This dish involves dredging the chicken breasts in egg and bread crumbs, then sprinkling it with a little garlic salt and baking  it until it’s crispy.  Sometimes I’ll top it with the aforementioned spaghetti sauce, sometimes it gets a little bruschetta topping and some cheese, and sometimes it’s cut into strips and served with honey mustard for dipping.

7.  Soup and sandwiches.  My favorite version of this is Progresso hearty tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich made with fresh mozzarella and roasted garlic paste.

8.  Last night, I expanded our repertoire with a pretty successful shot at sloppy Joes.  I paired them with steamed snow peas and sweet potato fries, and the entire family thought it was yummy.

9.  I don’t do it often, but I make a mean bbq beef in the crock pot.  I slap a big helping on bulkie rolls and toss a salad, and dinner’s done.

10.  Every once in a while – we don’t do it often – we have breakfast for dinner.  I’ll put a pound of bacon in the oven to cook while I make waffles and eggs (scrambled for me and Bean, over easy for Punkin’ and Mr. Chili).  Sometimes, I’ll skip the eggs and have a bowl of oatmeal, instead.  I actually like breakfast for dinner; maybe that’s what we’ll have tonight….

What do YOU have for dinner?

Monday Meme

Guess where I got it…

1) Put your iTunes on shuffle. Give me the first 6 songs that pop up. Two Princes-Spin Doctors; Sunday Mornings– Maroon 5; Owner of a Lonely Heart-Yes; You’re a God-Vertical Horizon; Love is Alive-Joan Osborne; Calling all Angels-Train

2) If you could meet anyone on this earth, who would it be? Desmond Tutu

3) Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 23, give me line 17. “I said nothing, but just kept looking right at him until he gave another little laugh and said, “Kath, you’re so nosy….”

4) What do you think about most?  Lately?  Dinner.  What to have, and whether or not it will fit in my allowance.  I’m kinda not liking that much.

5) What does your latest text message from someone else say? “I’ll let you know later today.  Gonna shoot for a Wednesday but gotta check on meeting times….”

6) Do you sleep with or without clothes on? yes

7) What’s your strangest talent? I can swallow a frickin’ HANDFUL of vitamins without a hitch.

8) Women…. (finish the sentence); Men…. (finish the sentence) Women… too often underestimate themselves; Men… shouldn’t give in so much to social pressure.

9) Ever had a poem or song written about you? yes

10) When is the last time you played the air guitar? I am more of an air drummer

11) Do you have any strange phobias?  I despise earwigs, and even though I know they can’t hurt me, I still squeal like a little girl whenever I happen upon one.

12) Ever stuck a foreign object up your nose? no

13) What’s your religion?  Kindness is my religion.

14) If you are outside, what are you most likely doing?  Going to the car

15) Do you prefer to be behind the camera or in front of it? behind

16) Simple but extremely complex. Favorite band?  Ugh.  Um…. I’ll pay money to see Vertical Horizon; how’s that for an answer?

17) What was the last lie you told?  “I’m busy that night.”

18) Do you believe in karma?  I do, but I wish it were a little more forthcoming than it seems to me lately

19) What does your URL mean?  It’s about finding inner awareness and tapping into what makes us uniquely who we are

20) What is your greatest weakness; your greatest strength? My weakness is trusting too much, but that is also my strength, I think.

21) Who is your celebrity crush? If I had to have one, Denzel Washington.

22) Have you ever gone skinny dipping?  Not recently.  Though I don’t object to the practice, I’ve not been offered an opportunity in a long time.

23) How do you vent your anger?  Well, it seems I vent severe anger and frustration with a shingles outbreak (dammit!), but I usually either yell or cry.

24) Do you have a collection of anything?  Dragonflies.  I have them everywhere, but none of them – alone or collectively -are overwhelming.

25) Do you prefer talking on the phone or video chatting online?  Honestly?  I’d rather text or instant message, but if I had to choose voice-based communication, I really like video calls (Which reminds me; Carson?  We need a Skype date!)

Falling off the Wagon

You know what they say about the road to Hell, right?

Yeah, well, I stopped listing my Do One Thing thing about a week ago because… well… I’d stopped DOING my One Thing.   So, in honor of getting back on that, my One Thing for today is to forgive myself for forgetting to do my One Thing(s).  I’m going to extend that forgiveness to giving myself a pass on the blogging about the One Thing, too; I’m going to just list the days I missed it as a group, ‘fess up to not doing it, and move on.

This whole “treating yourself as you would a beloved friend” thing is kind of hard, but I like it…

Quick Hit: Quiz

A friend of mine sent me a link to this quiz.  Even feeling like crap, I still got all 13 questions right.  It seems, though, that a perfect score has only been attained by 8% of the people who took the quiz by phone.

It scares the shit out of me that 92% of people can’t answer these questions correctly….
