Quick Hit: Someone Else’s Sorrow

I found out today that an acquaintance’s son has died.  I don’t know whether he took his own life – nothing’s been confirmed – but I suspect that’s what happened; I can’t find any news reports about an accident or a car crash.

This boy is the older brother of a girl Punk was friendly with in elementary school, though they haven’t been close in a good number of years.  I didn’t know the boy, but I was friendly with the parents, both the mom and the dad, though we were never close friends.  I found out about the death from the dad’s facebook page; he wrote a lovely dedication to the young man this afternoon.

It occurs to me that, had things gone just a little differently with Sweet Pea, I would not just be empathizing with those parents; I would know how they feel right now.  In this moment, while I’m offering condolences to the grieving mom and dad, I’m offering gratitude that I only have to imagine how they feel.
